Family Ministry |
Christian education is at the root of our faith. It allows us to experience our
faith in real ways and through real people. Therefore, we at St. Matthew's take
seriously the call to have learning as a continuing process of our faith. From
Sunday morning to midweek sessions, there is room for young adults, parents and
mature adults. The groups assemble under a wide range: sessions for lively and
informative discussions on topics which include the Bible, personal growth and
social issues. Each class emphasizes caring for the Fellowship of all believers.
While the list of classes changes regularly, the following is a list of many of
the opportunities available. Sunday Morning Forum Time: The Adult Education Committee works at providing a host of educational opportunities during the Sunday School hour. Generally there can be up to three modules running at the same time: one on Biblical studies, on relational material and one on connecting a person to their faith. Last year we offered a class on Lutheranism, studies on the Lutheran Confessions, and a Bible study entitled "See Through the Scriptures". This year we are agin addressing questions of faith from what it means to be a Lutheran, a video tape series entitled Questions of Faith, a series for Senior Citizens, and classes on parenting. Men's Study Group: This group meets during the traditional Sunday School hour, 9:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Men are invited to participate and study the weekly topics together. Women's Study Group: This group meets during the traditional Sunday School hour, 9:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Women are invited to participate and study the weekly topics together. Monday Morning Men's Study Group:This group meets every Monday morning, 6:30-7:30 a.m. to help men jump start their week by studying God's Word and applying it to their lives. Friday Morning Women's Bible Study Group:On-going in-depth studies that challenge and help participants grow in their knowledge and relationship with the Lord. St. Matthew's Women's Ministry: Monthly meetings, held both in the afternoon and evening hours, make it possible for anyone to be a part of the St. Matthew's Women's Mission. Women's ministry is taking a new twist to meet the needs of women today. The common board also hosts several church wide events during the year. Bible study, Christian service and fellowship are its hallmark. * Naomi Circle... meets 2nd Tuesday, 1:00 p.m. in Member's Homes * Joanna Circle.... meets 2nd Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Member's Homes * Deborah CIRCLE.... meets 2nd Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Room Mid-Week Events: Especially during the seasons of Advent and Lent, there are especially designed courses for adults. In small group settings, they attempt to make the faith relevant to our busy lives. Saints: Those over 50 are invited to come to various meetings of this group gathering at different times of the year. They gather for a meal and a presentation. The fellowship is important to those attending and provides a touchstone for our community. Mom's the Word:The mom's group gets together on the 2nd & 4th Thursday (depending on the school calendar) from 9:00-10:30 a.m. to offer support, spirituality, friendship and a listening ear for their busy lifestyles. Child care provided allows them to concentrate on themselves for a few moments. Women in Touch:This Monday morning women's group meets at 9:30 a.m. and discusses a variety of concerns and challenges. It regularly tackles the Scripture as a means to learn about life. Koinonia Groups: These small groups gather in the homes of members for study and reflection. They meet at a variety of times and varying number of times per month. It rapidly becomes a close network of friends and believers! Church Library: We have a wonderful church lending library filled with fiction, non-fiction, Bibles, study guides, children's books, videos and tapes. It is open each Sunday during the school year from 9:45am-11:00am. Come in and check it out! Lay Worship Participation: Beyond the normal Altar and Ushers Guild, these lay people learn about liturgy and worship by doing. Many have elected to read lessons, occasionally written prayers or acted as assisting ministers. Just take a look at some of the different offerings: Reformation Potluck Night: a serving group that regularly serves and eats meals with the community at an inner city church meal program . Senior Day Retreat: in the fall of the year, a trip is organized for the seniors. Lutheran World Relief is a branch of the ELCA that seeks to provide blankets and infant packages to foreign countries....items are gathered, packaged and sent. Bowling group: meets throughout the winter. Bridge Marathon:This activity is for couples interested in a monthly bridge game. Schedule set up during summer.
