About Dr. Powell and 2009 Day of Grace
Dr. Powell (PhD, Union Theological Seminary, Richmond) is the Robert and Phyllis Leatherman Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, OH. He is the general editor of the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary as well as the author of numerous articles and books.
Dr. Powell is an internationally known biblical scholar and author of more than 25 books on the Bible and religion. He has also written in the areas of spiritual formation (Loving Jesus), stewardship (Giving to God), homiletics (What Do They Hear?: Bridging the Gap Between Pulpit and Pew), and Bible Study (How Lutherans Interpret the Bible and Opening the Book of Faith). (Book titles link to Augsburg Fortress online.)
Dr. Powell is also one of the authors of the Book of Faith initiative that we are developing for St. Matthew’s [more]. He is author of the critically acclaimed Introducing the New Testament, to be released in October (click title for more information).
• Dr. Powell was the preacher at our Sunday morning Worship Services.
• Sunday Adult Forum - Lutheran Buzzwords: Four Things You Often Hear Lutherans Say about the Bible: All Christians say that the Bible is the Word of God…but what do they mean by that? There are a lot of different Christians in the world, and some of them say things about the bible that you don’t often hear in Lutheran churches. Dr. Powell presented four things that Lutherans “typically and traditionally” say about the Bible; though, as he pointed out, “one more thing Lutherans believe is that not everyone should be typical or traditional!” More information about the Adult Forum and a full schedule is [here].
• Sunday afternoon presentation - The Timeless Tale of a Prodigal Son: The story of the prodigal son in Luke’s Gospel offers an intriguing example of how the Bible comes to mean different things to different people.
Dr. Powell outlined three ways that this story has been read in different parts of the world (America, Russia, and Africa). He presented some things about this well known Bible story that you haven’t thought of before and we discovered possibilities for the story to come alive in ways often missed. He probed the big question of why the Bible seems to hold unique meaning for its readers and why knowing this is important for “opening the book of faith” today.
