Adult learning and sharing

The Adult Education Planning team has put together an exciting year for the Sunday morning adult forum time! These hour-long sessions, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. each Sunday morning, are set aside as time for the adults of our faith community to gather, learn and grow together. Our mission is to:

•increase Biblical literacy
•educate people on religious matters
•provide practical advice on Christian life

A listing of current offerings is provided in a document called "St. Matthew's University" (SMU) available each Fall. Click the SMU button at left for the 2009-10 schedule.

A new schedule for the 2010-11 year will be available in the fall.

Special Education classes: History and the Holy Land

St. Matthew’s will be offering three afternoon and evening classes on the history and archaeology of Israel. The sessions are specifically geared for those going on the church-sponsored trip to the Holy Land in May, but they are open to anyone who wants to attend. (St. Matthews is offering a tour the Holy Land, May 17-27.) Classes will be facilitated by Dan Bice.

The two remaining classes are:

Sunday, April 18, 6:00-8:00 p.m. - Digging for Jesus
We will explore the top 10 archaeological finds in the Holy Land that help us better understand the life of Jesus. These will include many artifacts and sites that will be part of our trip to Israel, including the ancient boat from Galilee, the Apostle Peter’s house, the excavations at Qumran and Masada and the city of Caesarea Maritima.

Sunday, May 9, 5:00-7:00 p.m. - Distinguishing fact from fiction in Israel
Every church, synagogue and city in the Holy Land has a grand story attached to it -- and some of them are even true.

Full schedule and more information about these special adult education sessions is online [here].

The following class was already presented. Video and a podcast of the class are online. Information [here].

Bringing the Dead Sea Scrolls to Life, Sunday, March 21, 12:15 p.m.
The discovery of these scrolls in late 1946 have been widely hailed as the greatest archaeological find of modern times. In this workshop, we will tell the amazing story of the discovery and then discuss their importance for understanding ancient Judaism, the origins of Christianity and our modern Bibles. Lunch will be provided.

Ongoing opportunities

There are many scheduled opportunities for Adult Learning. Some of them are listed below and on the menu bar to the right. All classes are open to everyone with a desire to grow in knowledge and connect with others at St. Matthew’s.

The groups assemble under a wide range: sessions for lively and informative discussions on topics which include the Bible, personal growth and social issues. Each class emphasizes caring for the Fellowship of all believers.
