Pictorial History

The photos on this page are from previous church directories and histories of St. Matthew's. Additional photos will be added as they become available. In most cases, clicking on a photo will bring up a much larger version which will help in viewing. Some photos, when enlarged, are less clear than the smaller photo, due to the original size. When a photo cannot be enlarged, that will be noted.

The cornerstone for the new Parish House (as churches were called in those day) was laid on May 21, 1921, and by December services were held in the new building. (See photos below of interior.) This structure still stands and now is built on all four sides with the nave, the commons, the Upper Room and education building. The library is the old chancel, which is at the opposite end of the door visible here. The organ now sits where this original entrance door was.

Sunday School classes were held in the church sanctuary in 1954. Arvis Kraetsch (foreground, with back to camera) was Sunday School superintendent for many years. The boy on the far left did not want his photo taken

The Payne home, located to the south of the church, went up for sale in 1954, the church bought the property – paving the way for the future Niebling Educational Building
